In May 2023, the current Nigerian President Tinubu assumed office. Since then, the government is focusing on improving the visa process for foreigners. Along with this, they have made it easy for Nigerians to obtain passports and established a contactless passport application system.
One such initiative is the issuance of e-visas for short term stay. Interested applicants have to apply online and the approvals can be expected within 24-48 hours. Once a visa is approved, the e-visa will be sent through email. Thus, eliminating the need for a physical stamp upon arrival at the airport.
Minister of Interior, Federal Republic of Nigeria Olubunmi Ojo announced on X that “Today, I presided over a meeting on Nigeria’s new visa policy, the Nigeria Visa Policy 2025 (NVP 2025), alongside the Comptroller-General of Immigration, Kemi Nanna Nandap. The proposed visa policy aims to enhance the ease of doing business, boost tourism, and strengthen bilateral and multilateral relations with other countries. In the proposed policy, we introduce a more streamlined and efficient visa approval process, including the electronic visa (e-Visa) as a separate channel for processing and obtaining Nigerian visas.”
STEPS TO APPLY FOR THE VISA
- Submit the application online
- Upload required documents which includes passport, return ticket and hotel reservation etc
- Pay visa fees
- Receive visa through email
This strategy is streamlined with Nigeria’s long term goal to boost tourism and attract foreign investment. This move is expected to uplift Nigeria’s attractiveness worldwide.
Besides easing tourism visas for travellers, Nigeria aims to remove middlemen who use inappropriate techniques for visa processing. It will also end the long waiting period at the departures.
