- Do not need a visa to travel to European countries
The system will be used in all EU nations except Cyprus and Ireland. These countries will still proceed with manual stamping of passports.
BENEFITS OF EES
- Revamp the management of EU external borders
- Identify overstayers and help in entry, exit and entry refusal
- Combat Identify fraud by collecting biometric data
- Strengthen security within EU by collecting electronic and biometric data
- Real time information shared with EU authorities
EES IMPLEMENTATION TIMELINE
EES is proposed to be implemented from 2016. The system has been delayed for several years. EU home affairs has announced the revised timeline for the launch of the EES system. The system is expected to be operational from October 2025.
The member states have agreed to start the system in autumn. However, no fixed date has been decided for the same. Member states can proceed in two ways:
- Launch the new system all at once
- Launch the system in various phases across six month time duration
Once the transition period ends, the commission will decide on the start date of the EES system. Once the system is established, all the crossings at border securities will be done through the EES system.
