Canada Immigration changes in 2025

The new year has ushered in tighter immigration policies as the federal government is trying to cool the country’s accelerated population growth. Last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had made significant changes in Immigration policies. It includes tightening limits on newcomers and stricter rules on temporary foreign workers.

Here is how Canada’s immigration rules are changing this year.

  1. Earlier, the government’s permanent resident target for next two year stood at 5,00,000 per year. Now, the target for 2025 is 3,95,000 and it will be reduced for 2026 to 3,80,000 and for 2027, it will be further tighter to 3,65,000.
  2. Canadian government has announced that study permits will be issued 10% lesser in 2025 in comparison to the last year 2024 (4,85,000). This year, 4,37,000 study permits will be issued, adding it will stabilize the intake cap at that same number in 2026.
  3. Canada will no longer grant 10-year multiple entry visa. Previously, multiple entry visa issued to maximum validity. As per new guidelines, officers will decide whether to issue single entry or mulitple-entry visa.
