Cruise travel to Kenya is a booming segment in the country’s tourism industry. The Kenya government is taking significant steps to attract more cruise ships and passengers this year. To make tourism to the country seamless, the Kenya government is reforming its visa rules.
On Sunday, Kenya welcomed cruise liner MS Norwegian Dawn, the biggest ship to ever dock on Mombasa port carrying 3100 passengers. On the arrival of the ship, Kenyan President William Ruto made an announcement. The Kenyan President shared that they are planning to reform their visa and Electronic travel authorization (eTA) for people visiting through Mombasa port. This action is streamlined with Kenya’s aim to provide effortless tourism experience.
William Ruto also stated that multi-entry eTA will allow tourists to travel freely between city and ship. This will result in people not having to go through unnecessary approvals every time they step out of the ship.
He further communicated that “We will be changing our visa and eTA to make entry into the country easier and seamless so that there is no paperwork or unnecessary delays for visitors.”
William Ruto also announced that these visa and eTA changes will be uniformly implemented for all foreign tourists at all major international airports.
Additionally, he stated that “Cruise ships were at an all-time high a few years ago, and then we experienced a slowdown. But last year, we had (about) 6,500 visitors, while this year, we expect the number to rise as we expect another eight cruise ships to dock,”.
William Ruto urged Kenya’s private sector to expand facilities in hospitality infrastructure. He emphasized on the need of increasing investments in the hotel industry to accommodate growing numbers of tourists.
