The Canadian government has announced the study permit applications that it will process in 2025 by setting the limit to 5,05,162. The cap, detailed in ministerial instructions published in the Canada Gazette, is intended to regulate the arrival of foreign students and address challenges related to temporary residency. These changes will be effective from January 22.
Earlier in September 2024, Immigration minister Marc Miller announced a reduction in the study permit cap that it is going to process for 2025. However, this cap is higher than the study permits processed in 2024.
This limit does not guarantee the number of permits that will be granted but it specifies the number of applications that will be processed. If Canada receives more applications than this limit, then processing fees will be refunded for those cases.
The cap will ensure sustainability of the education programs. The decision is also in line with Canada’s long-term goal of attracting global talent and boosting the economy. International students make significant contributions to the Canadian economy, not just through tuition fees, but also by filling labor market job opportunities, particularly in sectors where there is a shortage. Many students decide to stay in the country after finishing their school, empowering the skilled workforce.
