UK tourists traveling from dozen of countries have to pay a new entry fee starting January 8th, 2025

Travelers traveling to the UK from Wednesday, January 8th, will have to apply for a new travel authorization before entering the country. This permit will allow a person to enter England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The natives from the United States, Canada and three dozen other countries will have to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).

WHAT IS AN ELECTRONIC TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION?

The ETA is a pre-authorization for travelers visiting from countries where the UK does not require a visa. Initially, this programme was introduced for Middle Eastern countries. On Wednesday, this permit will impact a few more countries.

Candidates who have a visa, work or study authorization are not required to apply for ETA.

HOW TO APPLY FOR ETA?

The travel permit can be applied online using the UK’s ETA app. It costs £10 to apply and it is valid for two years. One can stay for a duration of six months using this travel document. The fee for this needs to be paid using a Credit Card. Also, it does not allow visitors to do paid/unpaid work.

Documents required for ETA:

  • Submit photos of their valid passport and contact details.
  • Take a valid photo adhering to the mentioned standards.
  • Answer a set of other questions.

Applications will get information on the decision in three days, via their Email.

ETA will be required for everyone including children and babies. Also, if someone is traveling through the UK via connecting flight, they will need to apply for ETA. However, there are below exemptions:

  • Dual British or Irish citizens
  • Visa holding migrants
  • British, Irish or British Overseas Territory citizens
  • Migrants having permission to live, work and study in the UK.
